Seeing the Forest: Patient Safety Culture

This short play, co-written with Dr Gail Mitchell, was first developed in 2007 and integrated into a research symposium at York University about patient safety culture in hospitals.  The purpose of the play was to creatively reflect the main themes of the symposium, with the hopes of engaging the audience in a more personal, experiential way.  The main researchers on the project were Dr Liane Ginsberg and Dr Deborah Tregunno, both of the Faculty of Health at York University.

Since then the play has been re-developed and used within professional development workshops for health care providers.  It challenges professionals to go beyond ‘the check lists’ and explores notions of blinding familiarity, illusionary control, dissmisive urgency and unyiedling determination.
